Every City Should Know Their Newest Member of Their Workforce: Generation Z

Generation Z includes anyone born from the late 1990s to the early 2010’s and in America this is the largest generation in history. The oldest members of Generation Z are just starting to enter the workforce!

According to research by Zero Cater this is the most ethnically diverse and digital savvy generation.  Millennials and Generation Z also differ greatly, and this extends to what they value most in the work place.

Generation Z is the most connected generation.  They were born after the internet was created, so they know no different.  According to Zero Cater “36% of Gen Z said equality is the most important cause they want their employers to support. 60% said they would support companies that take a stand on human rights, race, and sexual orientation.”

The Nomenclature for different Generations are known as:

  • The Silent Generation: Born 1928-1945 (74-91 years old)

  • Baby Boomers: Born 1946-1964 (55-73 years old)

  • Generation X: Born 1965-1980 (39-54 years old)

  • Millennials: Born 1981-1996 (22-38 years old)

  • Generation Z: Born 1997-Present (0-22 years old)

Zero Cater says that “the oldest members of Generation Z were 11 when the housing market collapsed and the U.S spiraled into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. They watched their parents’ generation lose 45% of their net worth on average. Not surprisingly, Gen Z has their minds on their money.  They’re more frugal than millennials, and they’re prepared to work hard to achieve financial stability.”
