CitiIQ Integrates the UN-Habitat Urban Monitoring Framework

World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo, November 4-8, 2024

Toronto/Cairo, October 28, 2024 – Today, CitiIQ announced the incorporation of the Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF) into the innovative CitiIQ platform, providing urban planners, policymakers, and community leaders with an important resource for urban management and sustainability.

CitiIQ provides a comprehensive quarterly scoring service for cities and towns around the world. UMF will now be included in all CitiIQ subscriptions, automatically providing harmonized city data indicators and scoring using the UMF formula. The UMF visualizations will be automatically available within the CitiIQ client dashboard in both single-city and multi-city views.

“Data science is a critical resource for cities and we are committed to empowering cities with the tools they need to thrive,” said Mackenzie Di Fonzo, Global Development Director of CitiIQ. “The integration of UMF into the CitiIQ platform offers robust capabilities to monitor urban conditions and track progress toward sustainability goals. It marks a significant advance for CitiIQ, reinforcing our position as a global leader in municipal data measurement.”

UN-Habitat collaborated with national partners, academia, local government officials, civil society actors, the private sector and various UN agencies to create the Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF) as a structured approach for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing urban data. It focuses on key indicators that assess the health, resilience, and sustainability of urban environments. The Urban Monitoring Framework works to monitor targets and indicators related to sustainable urban development using local-level metrics in the five domains of Society, Economy, Environment, Culture and Governance.

The CitiIQ scoring service removes the need for cities to develop their own software. Instead, clients access their quarterly city scores through a comprehensive dashboard accessible over the Internet. Now, the combined power of CitiIQ, measuring a city’s 35 most important considerations using 107 indicators, provides seamless integration with UMF results and visualization. This integrated access makes it easier to interpret urban data with the very best tools for transforming complex metrics into clear, actionable insights.

An example of this valuable integrated capability is an SDG Cities Global Initiative in Ghana, where ten cities are utilizing the combined CitiIQ/UMF service to inform and enhance community development under the guidance of UN-Habitat.

About CitiIQ

CitiIQ provides a quarterly service capable of scoring 10,000 cities and towns around the world. The CitiIQ framework employs evidence-based methodology to objectively measure the health and wellbeing of a city through its most essential elements. A customized algorithm normalizes data into scores out of 100 for 107 indicators, 35 considerations, 5 dimensions and the overall city score. Licensed clients access the full array of collected data and visualizations 24/7 with an intuitive online dashboard that is easy to use, economical and effective.

Global sustainability depends on localized progress for which measurement is critical. CitiIQ harnesses the power of data science and technology to drive positive change in urban environments around the world. In April 2020 as the pandemic was expanding globally, UN-Habitat commissioned the CitiIQ platform to measure and display COVID-19 data daily for 2600 global cities.
